About Shotokan Karate
Shotokan Karate is a traditional Japanese martial art founded by Master Gichin Funakoshi. Known for its powerful stances, dynamic strikes, and emphasis on discipline, Shotokan Karate builds strength, confidence, and character. Students progress through a structured curriculum that emphasizes kihon (fundamentals), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring).

The Chester County Shotokan Karate Club is proud to be affiliated with the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF), a globally recognized organization dedicated to preserving the art of Shotokan Karate. Founded in 1977 by Teruyuki Okazaki, the ISKF has played a crucial role in establishing and maintaining high standards for Shotokan Karate in the United States and worldwide. Through rigorous training methods and an unwavering commitment to traditional values, ISKF ensures that students learn authentic techniques while fostering respect, self-discipline, and personal growth.

Sensei Hoffman has committed over 50 years to his karate training, beginning his study with Master Okazaki in 1970.
With decades of experience in traditional Shotokan Karate, Instructor Bob Hoffman has been a dedicated martial artist and teacher at Chester County Shotokan Karate since its founding in 1981. His commitment to discipline, respect, and personal growth has helped shape generations of students in the Downingtown community.
He has the highest level qualifications for instructor, examiner and judge.
SENSEI KRISTEN HOFFMAN

Sensei Kristen is a dedicated and passionate Shotokan Karate instructor with over 35 years of experience in martial arts. As a 6th Dan black belt and certified instructor, Kristen has trained under some of the finest Shotokan masters and competed as a member of the US Team for many years.
Sensei Kristen is a firm believer in the power of martial arts to enhance overall well-being. She incorporates the principles of discipline and mindfulness not just in her teaching, but also as guiding values for a balanced, healthy lifestyle. Kristen’s approach to karate is rooted in holistic self-improvement, helping students build not only physical strength but also mental clarity and emotional resilience.
